2011 Harvest gets off to an early start ... ...especially in Bordeaux, where picking has begun ten days earlier than usual, for the Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the Graves AOC estates. In the Médoc, the white varieties are also being harvested, while the famous reds in Margaux, Saint-Julien and Pauillac should begin between the 6th and the 9th September. This Spring, the leaf canopy developed rapidly and the vines were three weeks ahead of schedule. However, from the 14th July until last week, a fair amount of rainfall and cooler temperatures slowed down maturity. Since 1993, this year will be the second earliest harvest on record - after 2003. In Provence, the harvest start date is not as remarkably early as in Bordeaux, and the AOC Provence vineyards will be picking only four days ahead of schedule. In the Languedoc-Roussillon, an early start, at the beginning of August this year, is not exceptional for the region. A promising vintage ? Overall, this early 2011 vintage has been compared to both 1997 and 2003. \\\"Three early-harvest vintages so close together reflect a global-warming phenomenon.\\\" In Champagne, producers will be embarking on the earliest harvest in history. Picking will start 22nd and the 25th August, when 100,000 harvesters will make their way through the 33,000-odd hectares of vines which make up the appellation. The quality of the grapes this year is a combination of high levels of acidity and sugar (\\\"which is still rising\\\"). As yet, it is too early to predict whether 2011 will be a vintage year or not. http://www.facebook.com/Bordeauxwinenews

Investors turn to Art and Great Wines : The volatile nature of the markets and the serious drop in stocks and shares registered these past few weeks have weakened the attraction of traditional investment options like shares, bonds and pension funds. \\\"So, it\\\'s not surprising that investors are turning to \\\'passion funds\\\', \\\" says Enrique E. Liberman, president of the Art Fund Association, based in New York. According to Artprice.com, an informative website dedicated to the collectable art market, global income from art auction sales has almost doubled in the last year, to reach 9.36 billion dollars. China represents 33% of the total figure. According to the 2010 Hurun World Wealth Report, there are currently 875,000 millionaires in China: 6.1% more than in 2009.... Specialists in wine investments claim that the Liv-ex will continue to increase by 21% this year. http://www.facebook.com/Bordeauxwinenews

The most expensive bottle of white wine ever .....has just been sold in London. This 200 year-old Sauternes (Bordeaux) - an 1811 Château d\\\'Yquem in fact - was bought for £75,000 by French collector, Christian Vanneque. Stephen Williams, CEO of The Antique Wine Company, which is specialized in sales of rare wines, pointed out that the bottle was from a legendary vintage. French buyer Christian Vanneque is keeping the bottle for the privileged clientele of his new restaurant in Bali. The last record-breaking bottle of wine was a 1947 Cheval Blanc, sold for $304,375 in November 2010. http://fr.news.yahoo.com/video/ytv-245724/white-wine-sells-for-117-000-sets-record-26050656.html
